Man Sues for Welding Rod Manganese Exposure

November 2, 2006

A man from Forsythe Ill. is suing manganese-containing welding product manufacturers, claiming his exposure to them caused him serious neurological injuries.

Michael Haskell claims the ESAB Group, the BOC Group, and Lincoln Electric were negligent in not warning him of the dangers of the manganese exposure that would occur with the use of their products.

He also claims that the defendants are liable for not supplying fume extraction systems in his workplace.

Haskell further claims that the defendants should have been aware of the health hazards associated with the exposure to the products they sold, distributed, or used.

Manganese is released by certain welding products, and is known to be highly toxic to the central nervous system in any level higher than the trace amounts usually found in the human body. Manganese exposure for periods as short as 49 days can cause neurological damage, according to the suit.

Haskell claims he contracted Parkinson’s disease as a result of his exposure to manganese at work, where he was exposed to welding product fumes.

The suit alleges that the defendants hid safety information regarding manganese that was gathered by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, Ferroalloys Association, the American Welding Society, and other trade organizations.

Haskell seeks damages in excess of $250,000.
